From the IEA's Global Hydrogen Review 2026: Scaling Green Hydrogen Requires Stronger Core Materials

2026-07-10

Over the past few years, much of the hydrogen industry's attention has focused on announced projects and investment plans. As the market matures, however, the discussion is shifting toward a more practical question: how to deliver green hydrogen projects that operate reliably, efficiently and at scale.

The IEA's Global Hydrogen Review 2026 reflects this transition. Global hydrogen demand exceeded 100 million tonnes in 2025, while low-emissions hydrogen production reached nearly 1 million tonnes, representing year-on-year growth of around 20%. At the same time, the report identifies high costs, uncertain demand, infrastructure constraints and slow policy implementation as key barriers to wider deployment.

For the electrolyser industry, these challenges are not only about expanding manufacturing capacity. They also highlight the need for continued improvements in efficiency, durability, reliability and supply-chain readiness. Core materials are an important part of this equation.

At Sino-Tech Hydrogen, we believe that supporting the next stage of green hydrogen deployment requires two complementary capabilities: continuous innovation in core materials and reliable industrial-scale manufacturing.

Advancing Material Performance

We continue to develop core materials for alkaline water electrolysers, focusing on composite membranes and non-PGM catalytic electrodes.

Our latest EHYDRO® PCM200 composite membrane achieves an area resistance of 0.1 Ω·cm². The EHYDRO® Coral-II non-PGM catalytic electrode has demonstrated 1.64 V at 4,000 A/m² in a specific 1,000 Nm³/h-class alkaline electrolyser configuration, based on customer testing. Meanwhile, the EHYDRO® PCM500+ composite membrane has accumulated more than 20,000 m² of commercial deliveries and has achieved more than 4,000 hours of continuous operation in industry projects. Key product performance has been witnessed by Bureau Veritas (BV).

Continued improvements in material performance can contribute to enhancing electrolyser efficiency, operational reliability and long-term durability, supporting the industry's ongoing efforts to improve the competitiveness of green hydrogen.

Building Manufacturing Readiness

As green hydrogen projects move toward larger deployment, consistent product quality and reliable supply become increasingly important alongside technical performance.

Sino-Tech Hydrogen has established annual production capacity of 300,000 m² of composite membranes and 600,000 m² of catalytic electrodes. EHYDRO® products have been deployed in multiple large-scale green hydrogen projects, contributing to more than 500 MW of installed electrolyser capacity in 2025.

The IEA notes that scaling the hydrogen economy will require coordinated progress across policy, markets, infrastructure and technology. From the perspective of a core materials supplier, we believe that continued innovation, manufacturing capability and dependable delivery are all essential to enabling the next stage of alkaline water electrolysis.

As the industry continues to scale, Sino-Tech Hydrogen remains committed to advancing membrane and electrode technologies and supporting the long-term development of green hydrogen through materials innovation.
